Part Of The Old Dasman Palace In Sharq

Around the Kuwait Towers is Dasman, which, along with its neighboring district of  Sharq, is home to a number of old-style buildings in various states of disrepair. There are plans to renovate many of these, but even as they are, they evoke a somewhat ghostly feeling of past days.

Another internationally acclaimed architectural achievement is the Bayan Palace and Islamic Conference Center located on 5th Ring Road and the Maghreb Expressway. This vast complex has been hailed as a cutting-edge reconciliation of sophisticated Western technology and symbolic Muslim expression.

Many of the government buildings in Kuwait are impressive. The National Assembly Building and the Ministry of Justice, located in the Qibla area along the sea front, are imposing modern pieces of architecture, as are the many ministries in the Ministries Complex off Sour Street.

Architecture With Traditional Motifs

Some of the most unusual and delightful architectural sights in Kuwait are private homes and reception halls. Independent wealth has supported nouveau-riche expressions of singular tastes and imaginations, and startling combinations of traditional, modern, Arab, and international styles and motifs. Along the 4th and 5th Ring Roads, and many of the radial trunk roads, you are liable to see any kind of structure you want — and any kind of structure you do not want. Some are elegant miniatures of grand themes, others are outlandishly eclectic, and still others are celebrations of pure kitsch.

The Main Arches Column Of The National Assembly

Al Sadu House and Bayt Al-Bader stand side by side on Arabian Gulf Street near the National Museum, representing two of the last preserved pre-oil-era dwellings in Kuwait. Al Sadu House became a center for Bedouin art and the sale of traditional goods in 1979. Visitors can observe Bedouin women weaving at their looms, hand-making carpets, camel bags and tent screens. Opening hours are from 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. and from 4:00 to 7:30 p.m. daily except Friday. (Tel: 243-2395)
