The Musical Fountains, often referred to as the Dancing Water Fountains, are located in a small park at Abdulla Al Mubarak and Sour Streets. Computer-controlled water spirals up in an array of colors while synchronized software fills the surrounding air with classical, modern, and Arab music. The water fountains, which are the largest in the Middle East, climb to a height of 30 metres. The fountains operate summer evenings only, from 6:00 to 10:00 p.m. A minimal fee is charged for children and adults.

Sixteen hectares of landscaped grounds comprise Green Island, a man-made land formation on the

Gulf east of the Kuwait Towers, accessed by foot via a 250-metre causeway. Amusements and diversions include an amphitheater where folk musicians give concerts, two restaurants, a game park for children, and an observation platform. A train circles the perimeter of the island and  takes on passengers for 250 fils. Entrance fees are also 250 fils. Green Island is open from 9:00 to 12:00 midnight daily all year. (Tel: 252 6513).

Green Island is part of an ambitious Waterfront Project, Phase One of which stretches all the way from the Kuwait Towers to Salmiya. On the Gulf side of Arabian Gulf Street are a long string of developed beaches, a swimming pool complex, and a yacht club complete with marina. It is the perfect place for a walk or a jog. On the other side of the street are many renovated private homes with impressive architecture, some lit up spectacularly at night.

Kuwait boasts an extensive Zoological Park for such a small country. Located in Omariya on Airport Road, it houses hundreds of species. Traditionally exotic beasts such as elephants, Bengal tigers, and giraffes are on display, along with a wide array of native fauna, including reptiles, migratory birds, and small mammals. Particularly interesting is the zoo’s program to breed nearly extinct native beasts for eventual re-introduction into the wild. Among these is the Arabian antelope or oryx, which many believe to have been the origin of the unicorn myths in the West. The zoo is open from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. daily except Saturdays. If you visit in the hot months, go early in the morning: by mid-morning, many of the animals will be seeking shade.
