Al Bustan Complex

The large, well-designed Sharq Market, along the sea front between Sief Palace and the Kuwait Towers, was opened in September 1998. It contains a fish market, cinema, Sultan Center supermarket, cosmopolitan restaurants and numerous shops, many of which sell the latest fashions in clothing.

Kuwait imports goods from Europe, America, and Asia, and the quality and prices range from very low to exorbitant from area to area and store to store. For example, you will find moderately priced items in Hawally on Tunis Street or in Al-Othman Complex, and at Al-Muthanna in the city, shoes and handbags start as low as KD10 and go up to well over KD100.

It is well worth doing comparison shopping to discover good deals. Kuwait’s shopping centers have everything from a multitude of novel and high-quality designer brands to excellently constructed economical

alternatives. Watches and jewelry, for example, range from Cartier, Rolex, and Chopard to lesser-known brands with a similar look for as little as half the price. For clothing, household goods, and gift items, sales occur in May and November, and it is always reasonable to ask the clerk for a discount.

Many Kuwaitis wear their traditional clothing year round. In summer, men wear white dishdashas, or long robes, and in winter darker colored ones. They are topped off with white or red-checkered head

cloths, which can make unusual gifts or conversation pieces to take home. At the same time, a wide range of apparel exists to accommodate the younger generation, those who travel, expatriates residing in Kuwait, and those who prefer Western styles.
