Visitors' Information

In this country of blue skies and sunshine, people are always looking for things to do outdoors. In Kuwait, not only is there pleasant weather most of the year round, but there’s a long coastline of beaches on a glittering aquamarine sea that offers myriad possibilities.

Along the seashore there are public beaches. Some are “family beaches” where men are allowed only if there is a woman accompanying them. Most beaches have dressing rooms, toilets, and shelter from the sun for picnics, etc. One-piece swimsuits for women are encouraged, if not always required.

Some family beaches have more amenities, such as the Messila Family Beach, where there is a large swimming pool with a water slide, fast food, and play areas for children. There are also numerous private beaches in front of chalets, sea clubs, and hotels. Some hotels have fabulous Friday brunches with use of the beach and pool included for the afternoon.

Kids Playing On The Sea

Beaches are scattered all along the coastline and the nearly invariably fair weather allows for sea sports the year round. The obvious ones are fishing, boating, and swimming, but there are also diving, wind surfing, and water-skiing, and the ever-more-popular jetskis and parasailing. There is equipment for rent at most of the beaches.

Swimmers, fishermen, beachcombers, and sunbathers are not quite so keen on motorized water sports, but do appreciate the lovely (and quiet) sailboats seen on the horizon almost daily. Various sizes of sailboats and windsurfers are for rent in Kuwait, and there are several sailing clubs. For a visitor, the best course is to find a friend who is a member.

There are a number of sailing events throughout the year, such as regattas, races, and cruises, some with windsurfers and catamarans as well as sailboats of all sizes. You can often find enthusiastic catamaran sailors

looking for crew members, with no experience necessary. Speedboats are also popular, especially for water-skiing. Many locals and resident expats own boats, so try to get an invitation.

Being on the sea changes your perspective of Kuwait. The water is seldom rough, so you can enjoy the freedom of the sea whenever you want, and many go out nearly every day.
